10 Tips for Vertical Gardening

We have a small backyard. So, I have to grow my vegetables up instead of out. There are certain things that I have learned from years of doing this. Here are 10 tips for vertical gardening.

  1. You have to use a support structure like a trellis to grow vertically. You can buy pre-built ones but I prefer to make my own. See my cucumber trellis as an example. You can save money building your own. All it takes is some wood, eye screws, string, or wire.
  2. If you plan to build your own use strong enough string or wire. Try using a clothes line. It is strong, plus most of them are plastic coated which help protect the plant when it gets big and heavy.
  3. The more places you can secure the plant to the trellis the better. I normally have a 5 inch or less  square gaps between places to secure the plant
  4. Use raised wood sided beds to attach your trellis. With just a few screws your trellis is less likely to fall.
  5. If you decide not to use raised beds to attach your trellis, make sure you anchor your trellis. You will never dig a deep enough hole to support the weight of the plant and high winds from a summer storm.  Use the same technique as you would a tree.
  6. Use pipe cleaners to secure your plant to the trellis. The wire is strong the fuzzy stuff protects the plant. You can reuse them as well. You can find them in the craft department.
  7. Ceder is not only good about keeping moths out of you closet. You can also use them in your garden. You can tie ceder closet rings, the ones that fit over the hanger, to your trellis. I tried this last year and I didn’t seem to have as many pests. I just tied a new one close to the top of the plant as it grew.
  8. You can grow melons vertically as long as your trellis is strong enough. You can use panty hose to create a sling to support the melon once it is bigger.
  9. If you have a shade loving plant you can plant it in the shadow of you trellis. Once your plant grows big enough it will create a wall of shade.
  10. Water the base of the plant. You can water the leaves too, but your main focus is the root system.
